What Causes PMS?

More than 75% of women experience at least one symptom of pre-menstrual syndrome.

These symptoms are characterized by the onset of a symptom such as bloating, anxiety, mood swings, cramping, headaches, etc. that occur in the 2 weeks leading up to menstruation.

About 5% of women have a more severe form of PMS also known as Pre-menstrual Dysmorphic Disorder or PMDD classified as more extreme anxiety, depression, extreme mood swings and irritability.

During a typical menstrual cycle, hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) fluctuate in rhythm to produce ovulation and prepare the uterus for pregnancy.

The first part of our cycle, typically from days 1-14, are part of our follicular phase. This stage of the menstrual cycle increases hormones such as FSH and estrogen, thickening the uterine lining and developing the egg in the ovary.

Mid-cycle or day 14 is ovulation which indicates the start of the second phase of the cycle known as the luteal phase from day 15-28. This second phase is dominated by LH and progesterone.

    If the liver is not working optimally, estrogen is not properly detoxified. This is when imbalances in the ratios of estrogen metabolites can occur.

    In addition, our body can also reabsorb the older “dirty” estrogens when there is an increase of inflammation and lowered digestive health, resulting in a hormonal imbalance.

    At the end of the menstrual cycle right before menses begins, those prime two weeks preceding menstruation, hormones begin to drop.

    If there is a hormonal imbalance already occurring, this drop can instigate symptoms as progesterone tends to dip faster and be significantly lower than estrogen.

    This is also known as Estrogen Dominance, which can be made worse by any other underlying complication such as nutrient deficiencies or health conditions.

    When these hormones do not dance the way they should, and hormones become imbalanced or have improper ratios to one another, the symptoms of PMS can occur.
